Nathan F. Garrett
Nathan Garrett joined the law firm of Graves Bartle Marcus & Garrett, LLC after a highly distinguished career in both state and federal law enforcement. Prior to entering private practice, Nathan was a Supervisory Assistant United States Attorney, serving as the Chief Prosecutor of the National Security and Terrorism Section in the United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of Missouri. In this capacity, Nathan was responsible for the investigation and prosecution of the District's national security cases, which included terrorism financing and support, money laundering, fraud, tax evasion, immigration violations, and violations of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (security controls related to import/export activity, specially designated states and nationals, and Presidential Executive Orders).
From 2002 through 2005 (and by special detail through 2007), Nathan served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, assigned to the Terrorism and Cybercrime Section. While working out of the United States Attorney's Office in Dallas, Nathan coordinated, investigated and prosecuted complex national security cases (terrorism support, money laundering, fraud, tax evasion and import/export violations) in addition to computer and intellectual property related offenses and fraud schemes. While in the Dallas office, Nathan tried the largest terrorism financing case in U.S. history.
Nathan also served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney from 2000 through 2002 on special detail to the United States Attorney's Office in Dallas, Texas while serving as a Special Agent for the FBI. In this unique capacity, Nathan was responsible for transitioning traditional national security investigations into criminal prosecutions. Nathan was assigned at the request of the Chief of the Counterterrorism Section at the Department of Justice to the post-9/11 created Terrorism Financing Task Force in Washington D.C. This assignment involved assisting the Department of Justice in identifying and coordinating national security investigations and prosecutions around the United States. Nathan served as a Special Agent in the FBI from 1998 through 2002 and investigated a variety of federal offenses, including national security cases and large-scale domestic and international fraud and tax schemes. Prior to Nathan’s federal service, he was a Missouri State Trooper and a county prosecutor.
Nathan's work with the Department of Justice led to extensive foreign travel and cooperative interaction with all levels and divisions of government within the United States and abroad. Nathan has been the keynote speaker at numerous government and private seminars focusing on national security, international investigations, white-collar fraud, immigration, trade restrictions and money laundering.
Nathan's private practice includes nation-wide individual and company representations in federal and high-level state criminal and regulatory investigations, including all levels and divisions of federal enforcement - IRS, DOJ, SEC, EPA, ICE, etc; international and domestic corporate compliance, investigations and policy; internal investigations and due diligence.
Nathan’s work with company-based investigations also includes select business litigation, including investigation-related liabilities and lawsuits on behalf of individuals and companies. Nathan provides representation for financial institutions involved in fraudulent account take-overs and is a frequent speaker for a national financial institution risk management and fraud compliance training company.
Nathan’s fraud-related experience has also equipped him to represent businesses and individuals in the prosecution and defense of civil fraud cases, including federal false claims (“whistleblower”) cases brought on behalf of the United States by individuals knowledgeable of fraud against the United States.
Nathan lives in Kansas City, Missouri with his wife, Adrienne, and two children, Payton and Cole Jack. Nathan is an avid hunter, antique gun collector and motorcyclist.
